DETAILS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES SCOPE
Our environmental and safety-related services are carried out independently and in accordance with national and international regulations. We maintain reputable reference laboratories and specialists in our work force. We have therefore created an inter-disciplinary consultant teams backed up by the best available technology. Our scope covers the followings:
We offer various forms of Environmental Studies for clients. These include:
- Environmental Resistivity Studies
This study applies geophysical methods to investigate the earth’s interior and locate mineral deposits. Its environmental relevance is the location of suitable geologic sites for waste disposal and other related projects.
- Environmental Impact Assessment Studies
The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA), while functioning under the Ministry of Environment as the apex organization for the overall protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources as contained in Decree 58 of 1988 and 59 of 1992, developed a set of guidelines on various sectors of the economy, to ensure environmental sustainability of these sectors through compliance with EIA Decree 86 of 1992 which makes an EIA mandatory for all new major projects or the redesigning and expansion of existing ones. This study is important if the government must approve a project after considering its socio-economic cost and benefit.
EIA Studies are therefore scientific investigations which describe the existing environmental status of a proposed project site and actions, and predict associated impacts.
In conducting this study, we adopt a multidisciplinary approach.
- Environmental Auditing / Evaluation
This improves the EIA process, and serves the following purposes:
- To establish an independent appraisal of an institute’s compliance
status to internal regulations and legal requirements.
- To develop an Environmental Management Programme (EMP)
- To proffer relevant recommendations.
It periodically assesses the positive and negative impacts of a project on the environment as well as safety related matters at a holistic level. We conduct this study on existing facilities or process and focuses on: site / ecology, design of processes, disposal of wastes / waste streams, safety issues, effluents quality and quantity, occupational and health aspects, stability structures, review of risk management systems, etc. It also assumes a multidisciplinary protocol.
We conduct this study to establish what impact an environment sustained due to a concluded activity or project. This is with a view to determining a remediation option.
- Potentially Polluted Area Survey
Environment that may have sustained certain impacts due to an activity is studied to establish whether the impact so feared actually occurred.
- Baseline Ecological Studies
Here, we attempt to articulate information about a project area by forming a descriptive benchmark on status of the ecology, collating socio-demographic and economic data, atmospheric and meteorological parameters, hydrographic measurements etc. These data provide answers to a lot of environmental issues including those of comparative developmental changes over the years.
This study therefore establishes the ecological background of an area through an assessment of its biological and physico-chemical characteristics, and covers the three tier features of a given eco-system: land, water and air, including underground water, vegetation, wildlife and socio-economics.
- Environmental Safety Studies
In this study, we subject large industrial installations to an evaluation for possible environmental impacts due to accidental release of chemicals as well as fire and explosion hazards and disposal of toxic materials.
- Baseline Measurements of Radioactivity Levels
The purpose of this study is to assure that in all areas where radioactive sources are used, such as the oil and gas industries, the level of exposure to individuals is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA Principle).
Nigeria’s economy is dependent to a large extent on oil and gas business and this sector is undeniably the largest importer and user of radioactive substances in the country. There is therefore the need for the industry to evolve and implement environmental programs designed to sustain the biosphere as an integral part of developmental projects.
One of such programs must include radiation measurements, safety and protection around its areas of operation with the overall aim of limiting the risks and consequences of exposure to high radiation levels with its adverse effects to man.
A known background radiation level usually serves as a reference term upon which any accurate environmental radiation pollution assessment is based.
Our study in this regard is therefore aimed at measuring different components of environmental radioactivity levels in air, water and soil around oil and gas operational locations with the following objectives:
- To estimate the baseline external doses from natural radioactivity in air, water and soil received by the population and personnel around the operational locations.
- To set up a baseline map of these exposure rates over the operational locations and/or the entire environment.
- To set up a baseline map of naturally occurring radionuclides related to the measured exposure rates.
- To provide information that may be necessary for epidemiological studies of radiation-related health effects around the operational locations.
In keeping with Agency guidelines, including local and international standards, certain levels of the environment are monitored to determine the levels and quality of effluents to ensure that the parameters under investigation are within acceptable threshold / limits.
Our comparisons are referenced to established standards and the study
covers the following:
- Air
- Sound and Heat
- Ground Water - as a groundwater protection strategy
- Waste and Waste Water
- Environments in which a designated facility with the potentials for pollution are located, etc.
- WASTE DISPOSAL AND LANDFILL SERVICES
Treatment of wastes includes reducing the amount and volume of materials which finally has to be dispose off to a minimum. This can be done through the process of incineration, but for most developing countries especially those with tropical climates, wastes incineration may be inappropriate largely because of the composition of wastes produced in these countries. These wastes are characterized by high moisture and organic content, and very low calorific value. The high cost and technical difficulties of such operations may present problems such as insufficient filter technology and associated air pollution. In most of these countries therefore an alternative and more practical option for waste disposal is by landfill.
This method has however been grossly abused – the use of burrow pits and wet lands (water fronts, swamps, etc) with the probable aim of land reclamation are all erroneously termed landfill.
Inspection and Tests Nigeria Limited undertakes professional landfill services through Site Identification (Baseline Ecological data studies for landfill sites), preparation and construction of landfills in a manner that will be environmentally friendly and ecologically acceptable.
The choice and final siting of a landfill, its technical design, operation and final reclamation is a very complex task requiring qualified personnel. The path way to it is the implementation of stated guidelines as a minimum criteria to safeguard the following:
- Human Health and Welfare
- Water Resource Protection and
- Natural Resource Integrity.
- CAPABILITY BUILDING PROGRAMS
We build the capability of clients, employees and the public on environmental and safety-related matters. This we do through workshops, seminars, courses, etc, relevant to the client’s area of business and needs.
- PROCUREMENT AND BOREHOLE DRILLING CONSULTANCY
We supply diverse safety gadgets to clients and undertake their routine and statutory inspection and maintenance to ensure their reliability. These include Personal Protective Equipment, fire fighting gadgets and safety hazard detectors.
Our bore hole services include drilling consultancy, maintenance and servicing of existing bore holes and water quality assessment noting biological, physical and chemical parameters.
